Governor Seyi Makinde, has inaugurated the Oyo State Council on Climate Change (OYCC), a 20-member body mandated to combat climate change impacts and implement global climate commitments at the state level.
Governor Makinde, who chairs the council, said the inauguration aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The Governor, said the council’s primary goal is to address climate-related threats facing the State, pointed to unpredictable rainfall patterns affecting food security and extreme weather conditions, including excessive heat.
The Governor while thanking members from private sector, civil society organizations, and academia for agreeing to serve, charged the council to make significant impact that will leave a lasting framework for the future.
Also speaking Commissioner for Environment cum vice chairman of the council, Mr. Ademola Aderinto, noted that human activities have triggered negative climate effects which requires localized solutions.
According to the Commissioner, OYCC will also oversee work on a new climate action policy document received last week, and turn it to policy law.
The Commissioner, also said that major mandate for the new council is to drive a carbon credit system tied to emissions mitigation.
The council include commissioners, permanent Secretaries, private sectors, civil society organisations and academia.
Present at the inauguration include Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, Lawmakers, top government functionaries and traditional leaders led by Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, represented by Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.
